Audition Tips

1. Prepare for your Audition.

~Practice your audition song so you are able to perform at your best when you audition.

~Work on being expressive when you sing. Think about what the character is feeling and let your performance show that you can act a song as well as sing it.

~Memorize your song and be sure to project your voice when you audition.

~ Bring sheet music for the accompanist. (Remember to always thank the accompanist!)

2. Dress Appropriately.

~Wear an outfit that is casual but neat. (save the flip flops and cut off jeans for another day!)

~Consider wearing an outfit that fits the character you would like to be considered for in the show. It should not be a costume but something that lends itself to the style of the character or the show.

3. Mind your Manners.

~Be friendly, polite and professional with every adult you interact with at the audition.

4. Keep an Open Mind

~ Don't get your heart set on one particular part. You may have a role that you are hoping to be considered for, but be open to playing any role, including ensemble. Every show you are in gives you the opportunity to gain valuable performing experience.

~ Communicate to your directors that you are open to playing any role in the show, including ensemble*. Directors are looking for actors and actresses who will give their all in a show no matter the size of their part.

(*Enthusiastic and dedicated ensemble members are greatly appreciate by directors and will often find themselves being given extra things to do in the show. Plus, you never know when that person with a lead role will have to drop out of the show and someone will be plucked from the ensemble to take over. It does happen!)

5. Mistakes!

~Don't stress out if you make a mistake in your audition. Directors understand that you may be nervous and that mistakes happen sometimes. We can see past any mistake you make to the talent you possess. That's our job! So don't worry if you forget a lyric or flub a line. Sometimes a mistake can actually help you get the part (ask Betsy to tell you about the time she messed up in an audition and got the part because of it!)

6. Relax and Have Fun!

~Shows are fun! Auditions are exciting! Enjoy the audition process and get ready to have a blast as we all work together to put on a fabulous show!
